Happy Holidays from my house to yours!

Posted by: - December 13th, 2010

It’s my favorite time of year again……..Welcome to Gingerbread central.  Each year, I create lovely (and edible) houses to thank all my buyers who are celebrating their first Christmas in their new homes for their business and to wish them happy holidays!  I made a total of 24 houses this year to pass out to clients. With my template, the Gingerbread pieces are formed and baked and I put them together with melted chocolate. When standing and sturdy the next step is the frosting!! The royal icing is perfect to create the icles on the eves and snow drifts on the roof.  Each of the homes are personalized with the family name, every window gets a candle and each door gets a wreath.  The Gingerbread house is then  wrapped in celophane and topped with a bow. Now comes my favorite part….. delivering. The children get so excited that it feels like Christmas morning. The adults are so happy to receive them and can’t decide whether to eat them right away or leave them out for decorations through the holidays!  This is the least I can do to thank all my wonderful clients for a terrific year!

Bart knows Bangor…Central Street Farmhouse

Posted by: - November 23rd, 2010

During our downtown Bangor walk last evening, Bartley discovered his new favorite store.  From the street he noticed how warm and inviting it was and wanted to bound right in. Situated on Central Street just before Epic Sports is the Central Street Farmhouse.

Started during the summer of 2010 by Bangor natives Betsy and Zeth Lundy, specializing in beer, wine and CHEESE making supplies. They are also offering fresh dairy products and artisan cheeses, toping it off with an eco-baby section with cloth diapers and lots of other hard to find items. Of course Bart is most excited to start his new hobby of making cheese,  but he also learned that there are classes being offered in wine making, beer brewing, cloth diapering, and so much more. It is a new and exciting Bangorism in the making!!!!!!! Take a look at www.centralstreetfarmhouse.com

Bart knows Bangor

Posted by: - November 11th, 2010

Hannibal Hamlin is a Bangorism. On Sunday afternoon Bart and I stood in awe at the glowing fall color in the  Kenduskeag Mall between State  and Central Streets. As we enjoyed the beauty of the park and the statue, we wondered what it may have been like to walk the streets of our fair city during Mr. Hamlin’s lifetime.

Kenduskeag Mall, Hannibal Hamlin

Born August 27, 1809 in the Paris District of Maine, moved to Bangor in 1851 to the Hannibal Hamlin Mansion at 15  Fifth Street, died while playing cards at the Tarratine Club, and lies forever at the Mount Hope Cemetery. He served as the Vice President to Abraham Lincoln, Governor of Maine , U.S. Senator, Congressman and Minister to Spain.

Mr. Hamlin’s two sons, Charles and Cyrus served in the civil war. His daughter Sarah and son Charles were present at the Ford Theater the night Lincoln was assassinated . Last but not least his two wives were half sisters. Bart is not sure about a man in a cape. Stay tuned for more of Bart’s adventures!

Mitchell Institute Brunch

Posted by: - November 5th, 2010
I marvel at the fact that Senator George Mitchell – a figure of such enormous international importance – continues to dedicate himself to the young people of Maine. The scholarship program he created has afforded 1,800 ordinary Maine students a chance to go on to college. As an active member of the Bangor business community, I feel very strongly that we, too, must step up and be there for our youth – to show them we value them and to help them achieve their goals. The Mitchell Scholars I have met are hard working and deserving young people who are destined to do great things for themselves, our state, our communities, and our economy. All they need is a fair chance. I am sponsoring the Mitchell Institute’s Annual Brunch as a means of supporting the Mitchell Institute and this new class of 130 Mitchell Scholars, and as an expression of my sincere appreciation to a great man from Waterville, Maine whose vision is creating such promise for our state’s future:  Senator George Mitchell.”  ~Tricia Quirk

Tricia took this opportunity to meet and speak with the newly appointed scholars  to find out their hopes and visions.  Tricia and her husband Bob have been  supporters of the Mitchell Institute since it first was established in 1995.

Fantastic Downtown Building

Posted by: - November 4th, 2010

38-40 Columbia Street is a surviving example of the work of Wilfred E. Mansur; property was built in 1911 as the end bay to a much larger structure.  The rest of the block was destroyed in the fire of 1925.  The building had been vacant and neglected for 35 years before being purchased by current owners in 2000.  The floors were stained black and buckling; the roof was leaky and had damaged the tin ceilings.  The owners dove into the project, trying to keep certain elements of the building intact while gently adapting it to their needs. The end result is a stunning property which contains a studio with storefront on the ground floor, rental office on 2nd floor, living loft on 3rd & 4th floors, tin ceilings, original woodwork, & amazing views of downtown!  A true one-of-a-kind property like no other! $450,000
